What the day actually is
This is a full day out of Cairns to the Great Barrier Reef, run by Reef Experience on a purpose-built 24 metre twin-hull aluminium catamaran. You board directly at the vessel at A Finger in the Cairns Marlin Marina. The boat calls at two different reef sites, weather dependent, rather than one, so the snorkelling and diving happen in two different patches of reef rather than the same water twice.
One scuba dive is included in the day: either a dive for someone already certified, or a 20 minute introductory dive for a beginner with no qualification at all. Snorkelling is unlimited throughout, including at the second site, so a non-diver in your group is never sitting on deck waiting for you to finish.
The scuba dive that is included
If you already hold a diving certification, bring proof of it and you can do a certified dive on the reef. If you do not, you can still go underwater on a 20 minute introductory dive, sometimes called a resort dive: a short, supervised dive with an instructor, done after a briefing, in shallow water. It is not a course and it does not leave you certified afterwards, it is a guided taste of diving on the day.
Additional dives beyond the one in the fare are not included, and neither is a dedicated guide for divers who are already certified. Cameras are not permitted on a first introductory dive at all, which is Queensland law rather than a choice the operator has made, so do not plan on filming your first breaths underwater.
The certification question
No. The introductory dive exists precisely for people with no certification, so the only genuine barrier is age and health rather than experience. The minimum age for an introductory dive is twelve. Anyone under sixteen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and a 16 or 17 year old can travel with prior written parental consent, provided the liability forms are signed by a parent or guardian as well.
Certain medical conditions and medications can rule someone out of diving altogether, so if you have a health condition it is worth checking before you book rather than on the boat. The trip is not suitable for anyone with mobility impairments, heart problems, respiratory issues or epilepsy, diving or not: the boat, the ladders and the water conditions are not built around those needs.
How the day unfolds
Check-in is at 7:30am and the boat departs at 8:00am sharp, so arriving on time matters more on this trip than on one with a looser start. After boarding it is roughly an hour and a half by catamaran out to the reef, with the marine biologist's presentation filling part of that crossing so you know something about what you are about to see.
Breakfast is served at the reef for half an hour once you arrive, then the day is yours to dive and snorkel until lunch, which runs for an hour. After lunch there is more time in the water at the second reef site before the hour and a half run back to Cairns Marlin Marina. The operator asks guests to call 24 hours before travel to reconfirm, which is worth doing rather than assuming the booking stands as made.
The boat
Reef Experience is a purpose-built 24 metre twin-hull aluminium catamaran, built for exactly this crossing rather than adapted from something else. The twin hull is a stabler platform in open water than a single-hull boat of the same length, which matters on a day that spends three hours at sea each way.
You board directly at the vessel at A Finger in the Cairns Marlin Marina rather than transferring out to it by tender, so what you see at check-in is what you are sailing on. Tea and coffee are available all day while the boat is not moving, so there is somewhere warm to sit between dives even if the water has cooled you off.
What food is on board
A cooked bacon and egg roll is served for breakfast on the way out, and tea and coffee run all day whenever the boat is stopped. Lunch is a freshly prepared barbecue: grilled meat and vegetables with salads, served at the reef rather than on the crossing home.
On the way back there is a glass of wine with cheese and crackers, a small, deliberate way of marking the end of the day rather than just turning the boat around. Dietary requirements are catered for as long as you flag them when you book, rather than on the day itself.
Who this trip suits
It suits a mixed group best: a certified diver and a total beginner can be on the same boat and both come home having dived, one on a certified dive and the other on the introductory dive, with a non-diver in the party free to snorkel at both reef sites instead. Nobody has to sit out the water entirely to keep the group together.
It does not suit anyone with mobility impairments, heart problems, respiratory issues or epilepsy, and certain medical conditions and medications can rule out diving specifically even for someone otherwise fit for the boat. A fuel levy applies to the day, and a peak season surcharge applies on some dates, on top of whatever you book.
